Saturday Night Cocoa Fudge is the coming-of-age story in an era of bobby socks, poodle skirts, and the freckled-faced girl that wore them. It's also about the Deep South and sweetly flawed women who taught her what she was meant to be and what she was not meant to be. Their corner of the world was filled with folklore, superstition, and mystical ideas. Her grandmother believed and practiced most of these, passing them onto the next generation. The little girl's life was populated with strange relatives, quirky neighbors and mysterious Bible verses that could stop the flow of blood. Being a member of this bizarre family made life worth living. These people were so fiercely loyal in their love for her, for each other, she felt they deserved to have their story told.

You took me back to my early years, visiting my Granny in Tazewell, Tn andgrowing up in a small neighborhood in Knoxville, Tn. No matter where one is from this story will resonate with you. Growing up each of us had that favorite grandmother, aunt, uncle, and best friend we loved to fight with. We each had our fears of bugs, snakes, and bumps in the dark. We each had skinned knee's, bumps on the head, and trips to the ER to check if it was broken or not. Gloria Teague brings back good memories of growing up before internet, hand-held games, and cell phones. When a kid could be kid. She even gives you memories you might claim as one of your own, even if it wasn't. Thank you Miss Gloria.

Saturday Night Cocoa Fudge (Audible Audio Edition) Gloria Teague Rebecca Horton Books Reviews
As was mentioned by another reviewer, this was not a "story," but rather a chronicled narration of a young girl (Gloria) growing up in the south during the early 1950s. Much of the focus was on the relationship between her and her grandmother, who seemed to be the major guidance in her early years.
I also grew up in the south during that time, and it brought back so many wonderful memories. I think you would enjoy this book if you grew up in the early 50s, and especially if you grew up in the south and spent a lot of time with your grandmother. The author (Gloria) painted beautiful, vivid images of that simpler time. And, if I understand correctly, the author is narrating her own life. I compliment her on her ability to take her memories and project them through the eyes of a 5 year old...that is not so easy to do.
Thanks for a fun read...
Gloria Teague gives us a look into the past. Warm, descriptive, and fun. After reading it, I thought about cuddling up by a warm fire and thinking back on my childhood.
This little book was a breath of fresh air to me and just what I wanted. Most stories have some depressing parts to get through. I like to read cheerful books, not necessarily comedies. This fit the bill. I will read more by this author and would love to read more about her growing up years. Thank you for letting me read it free. But it is well worth the money to buy it.
I loved this book! I wasn't raised in the "deep south" or in a coal mining town, but I was a child during the same era as "Glora Lynn" and reading the stories of this child brought back a flood of nostalgia for my own childhood past. I couldn't put the book down until it was done - I had to turn page after page to see what antics little Glora Lynn and her family and friends would be up to next. My only disappointment with this book was that it ended and left me with no more Glora Lynn! LOL I could so envision this book as a movie with Glora Lynn brought to life making you laugh, cry, and sigh just as the book itself did. Excellent work capturing days gone by and describing life events in an entertaining and captivating way. I'm already reading it a second time!
After reading THROUGH THE SHADOWS by Ms. Teague, I ordered another one right away. The first one was good reading, but SAT. NIGHT CHOC. FUDGE hit me where I live. Living just a few miles shouth of the town where Gloria wrote about, I could relate to almost everything she wrote about. My Mamaw could give her Mamaw a run for her money, and she was my hero also. Well written, no backing up to catch up because of errors. More than worth your time.
I remember my older sister making cocoa fudge, with the same uncertain results that Gloria's family had! I loved that stuff, whether it was firm, liquid, or something in between. This was a sweet story, not just because of the fudge but because of the little girl and the loving women in her life, especially her Momma and her Mawmaw. My favorite part was the courage speech her grandmother gave her before she had her tonsils removed. Life wasn't easy for this family but there was wisdom and plenty of love.
With this book, Ms. Teague transported me back to MY childhood in the 1950's. In a small rural town at the foothills of the Cumberland Mountains, she writes about her childhood, a nostalgic account of a time when children went outside to play, doors were left open, keys left in your car (if you had one), radios were the main media, televisions, if your family was fortunate to have one, was black and white with only 2 or 3 channels available.
While reading this book, she took me back to the simpler, laid back time of my own childhood. If you can remember when cocoa fudge was cooked on the stove, sometimes eaten with fingers, sometimes with a spoon, but NEVER bought in a store, then this book is for you!!
